After training as a painter (he storyboards his films as full-scale paintings), Akira Kurosawa, the legendary Japanese film director and screenwriter, entered the film industry in 1936. Although he was awarded important art prizes, he gave up his ambition to become a painter to become one of the most important and influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. His work stands as a monument of artistic, entertainment, and personal achievement.
